When I was an apprentice, back when we still did afro perms, I was working at Hunter Barrow Esq in Lancaster England. Roger’s wife was having cap streaks, her hair was resistant AND she like to have a white blonde colour. Carla and I were working together and we were both desperate to impress as we were the youngest in the salon. We pulled the streaks through and as I was checking over the streaks to make sure they were pulled through evenly, Carla dashed off to mix up the bleach. We both applied the bleach to the roots and put Ula, boss’s wife, under the dryer. Well… within minutes her hair blew up into a white foam and kept expanding!!! I dashed over and took her out to see her hair turning whiter than white. I dashed her to a free backwash basin and quickly rinsed… As I rinsed, her hair fell out and went down the plug hole! You can imagine the thoughts going through my head at this time… and yes the air was blue. I saved as much of her hair as I could but it was pretty bad. Fortunately Roger was an extremely good stylist and managed to hide a lot of the damage. I could have killed Carla who had mixed the bleach with 100 vol peroxide instead of 40 vol.

Hello World
Hi to you all,
I’ve started this blog to share hairdressing stuff with you. Share experiences, both good and bad and to have some fun. I have been a passionate hairdresser for more than half my lifetime and I still get great pleasure from doing hair. I didn’t know at the time that when you choose a career, it’s important to doing something that you love to do and get paid for it. My family were all about getting a degree and a getting into a profession. My mum got such a shock when I told her that I wanted to become a hairdresser, she choked on her cup of tea! Then she got me an apprenticeship in a top salon and the rest is history. It just didn’t occur to me that she might disapprove and I’m very grateful to have had her support. Now, years later, I understand why it is so important to do something that you love and that is simply my experience. To all of you who hate your work… It’s never too late to change okay?
